On the Steppe Edges of Russia in the XVI-XVII Centuries. Foundation of Voronezh

In the mid-XVIth century, Russia began actively defending its southern borders, fighting Crimean Tatar raids. Outside the outlying Russian cities, guard and stanitsa (cossack village) services were organized. In 1586, the Voronezh fortress was founded, which soon became part of the Belgorod abatis line fortification system. Members of the guard service, minor servicemen, simultaneously became warriors and farmers, laying the foundation for the economic development of the region. In the early XVIIth century, Voronezh began to play an important role in organizing "Don releases" and building a river fleet.
